The relationship between students and teachers is a mutual contract Joseph Beuys
Even though every age has redefined both art itself and the function of the universities the universities of the arts have at all times been a temporary home for the first few years of dealing with theory and practice of art and of a creative exchange between teachers and students
The history of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna which was founded in 1692 by the court painter Peter Strudel and is thus the oldest academy in Central Europe is closely connected with the history of art in Austria The highlights in the importance and activities of the Academy coincide with the highlights of artistic creation in Austria and many famous artists and graduates have provided inspirations for lively development - for example Anton Maulbertsch who brought baroque painting in Austria to its zenith Franz Xaver Messerschmidt Georg Ferdinand Waldmüller or Hans Makart
In the 19th century it was mainly the architects - Theophil Hansen Gottfried Semper August von Siccardsburg Otto Wagner and others - whose innovative works exerted a decisive influence on the cityscape of the metropolises of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy The annexation of Austria by national-socialist Germany in 1938 led to the exclusion of dissidents and at the same time the Academy lost its administrative autonomy After World War II committed rectors and artists such as Fritz Wotruba or Clemens Holzmeister soon made the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna known beyond the borders of Austria In 1955 the autonomy and the university character of the Academy were reaffirmed and a number of new institutes were added to the traditional master classes In 1988 the Academy was given a new organizational form by which teachers and students together assumed the responsibility for a democratically organized Universitas artium In 1998 the Academy finally obtained the legal status of a university but retained its traditional name
Today the Academy regards itself as an international field for experiments in contemporary art and architecture and as a place where theory and practice science and art meet An adequate artistic education is aimed at bridging the division between studio and seminar room and at showing that any artistic creation every object in space also contains a certain amount of »theory« in its production and reception This discourse is also reflected in the great number of exhibitions and events realized at the Academy Exhibitions are not only a presentation of art works and an experimental exploration of ones own artistic practice but also the most important and most significant interface between practice and theory and as such an integral part of art education Last but not least these activities are also conceived as a medium for making the principles and results of art education more transparent to the public This confrontation with a variety of contemporary artistic discourses and positions which underlies the education at the Academy also contributes to the international success and presence of the graduates such as Ecke Bonk Valie Export Christine and Irene Hohenbüchler Elsa Prochazka Marta Schreieck Lois Weinberger Franz West and lately also Andreas Fogarasi Anna Jermolaewa Florian Pumhösl and Jun Yang
