Limburgs Universitair Centrum:The educational system of the UHasselt has been conceived as a day campus and working campus This implies that the emphasis is on the activity and self-development of the students since learning has to be done by the student himself for himself the initiative is at his side Teaching is thought of as the design of learning environments or learning situations which activate and stimulate the students learning process In this respect a distinction is made between organized education and non-organized education * Organized education * Non-organized education * Educational orientation and student focused approach * Other aspects organized education means the functional application of traditional forms of teaching such as lectures tutorials workshops practicals group work and project work These mainly have the role of supporting independent study In the Faculty of Medicine and in the Faculty of Sciences these different methods can be geared to one another taking into account the subject matter covered as well as the students needs This is done by concentrating the formal teaching for a certain subject in 2 or 3 halve days and by utilizing flexible time tables In the programmes in Medicine Biomedical Sciences and Applied Economics a strong emphasis is put on assignments for individual study and small-group workshops this at the expense of large-group lectures In the Faculty of Applied Economics the real world of business economics is brought into the curriculum by means of study visits to enterprises government organisations and the like by a compulsory traineeship after the second year and by a business research project which builds upon this traineeship during the third year Overall the use of ICT-applications in education is increasing steadily non-organised education means that appropriate and state-of-the-art study facilities are made available to the students and that a stimulating study environment is enhanced Therefore rooms and equipment are available on UHasselt premises which allow for quiet study on campus In these rooms the resources which can be requested for study of the subject areas concerned are available These resources include audiovisual media such as videotapes slides and computer aided instruction and tests as well as molecule models anatomic models maps geological samples preparations microscopes and microscopic specimen On open shelves the standard textbooks which are part of the course materials are available For paper assignments the thesis in particular and study in general students can use the library with online datafile search among other facilities Furthermore the students have free access to the different computer facilities on campus when there are no classes Moreover when confronted with study problems of whatever kind students can always turn to members of staff for additional help By intentionally alternating these different tools with organized education UHasselt creates the opportunity for its students to plan and control their study progress independently The strong educational orientation and student focused approach of Hasselt University also show from the academic calendar For the 1st and 2nd year students in the Faculty of Sciences the academic year is split up in 3 terms of 12 weeks each Each term consists of a teaching period of 9 to 10 weeks a study week and 1 to 2 weeks of exams In the Faculty of Medicine the academic year is split up in 6 block periods of 5 weeks For 1st year students in the Faculty of Applied Economics the academic year is split up in 3 terms of 12 weeks each In these ways the study effort is balanced out over the academic year The student is informed at fixed intervals about the progress he is making This smoothens the transition from secondary to higher education Other aspects which make UHasselts educational approach stand out are the orientation programme and the introductory courses for first year students the assignment of mentors and godfathers and godmothers to each first year student lecturers weekly consultation hours different opportunities for intensive counselling and the student feedback groups in which students delegates have the opportunity of reporting on difficulties and bottlenecks in the delivery of courses and the related study work
