The Brandenburg Technical University BTU was founded in 1991 as the only technical university in the State of Brandenburg The BTU assumes a special responsibility for the promotion of economic development in the State of Brandenburg- particularly for the parts of the state which are remote from Berlin The BTU functions as an innovative element in a cross-border region which must be reorganized and also as an initiator and co-designer of structural changes to the regional economy

Concept
The BTU Cottbus views itself as a site for ambitious research and research-based instruction On this note the BTU has formulated the following concept
* A focus on high-profile future-oriented themes
* Effective safeguarding of the scientific potential through the integration of applied research with basic research
* Goal-oriented support for young scientists
* The consequent internationalization of research and instruction
Research
In conjunction with this concept the BTU has defined four basic themes ”material energy environment and informationcommunication” and derived the following intra-faculty research fields which are especially supported by the university leadership with appropriate measures research centers goal definition research groups composed of young scientistsetc

Course of studies
The study programs at the BTU are characterized by a broad especially natural scientific and methodological foundation and a reference to current research Significant structural criteria in the conception of the syllabus of the BTU are in addition to the close orientation of instruction to existing research foci interdisciplinary and international The conversion of previous diploma programs to the consecutive degrees of bachelor and master has made effective progress and should be completed by the beginning of the winter semester for the years 20072008
