Brief history
Cooperation across subject and faculty borders and an entrepreneurial spirit of education is the hallmark of Linköping University LiU Since its foundation in the 1970’s the university has established itself as an innovative and modern institution in both education and research
During the past decade LiU has experienced rapid growth involving the establishment of a new campus in the twin city of Norrköping With a student population of 25 000 and 3 500 employees LiU is one of the major universities in Sweden
The university is organized in four faculties and 14 departments

Research Interdisciplinarity and specialization
Research and education is carried out in broad multi-disciplinary and cross-faculty departments a framework that facilitates cooperation between disciplines and across faculty borders This together with an ongoing dialogue with industry and society at large has been essential for the university’s ability to combine basic and applied research in thematic and innovative contexts
Organic Bioelectronics Nanotechnology Functional Materials Medical Visualization Simulation are examples of areas that have been appointed centres of excellence by the Swedish research councils Other examples of important research areas are entrepreneurship and innovation migration studies gender studies and adult learning
Education Student–centred learning
LiU offers education at basic Bachelor’s advanced Master’s levels and PhD level
A variety of programmes of continuing education at Master’s level taught in Swedish or English give students an opportunity to gain the competitive edge that can spur a professional career
Well-structured integrated and interdisciplinary study programmes form the core of our education
There is a clear focus on study programmes leading to advanced professional degrees within areas such as engineering management teaching and medicine Linköping University is dedicated toward developing models for student-centred learning with approaches such as problem-based learning portfolio pedagogics and project orientation In 2007 two LiU educational units – out of five in Sweden – were designated as national Centers of Excellent Quality in Hgher Education the Medical program and Control systems a core subject in LiU engineering education
Much of PhD training at LiU is conducted in interdisciplinary graduate schools in areas such as physics and materials science in electronics and automatic control in computer science in engineering design in biomedical science and in educational science
