Teaching Quality
Recognised as a Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning by the Higher Education Funding Council Edge Hill has been awarded Commendations for Teaching and Learning in every subject review by the Quality Assurance Agency QAA in the last three years 2005 saw further recognition in the first National Student Survey with Edge Hill polling joint fifth for overall satisfaction of students at higher education institutions and rated at or above the national average in all seven teaching quality areas
Nursing midwifery and other health care programmes were commended in all areas assessed by the QAA and Department of Health in 2005 namely student progression quality of learning and teaching and learning resources Furthermore Edge Hill was the first and one of few providers to be awarded Ofsted�s Grade 1 for Management and Quality Assurance in both Primary and Secondary Initial Teacher Training
Research and Knowledge Transfer
The university works with a range of client organisations from the public voluntary and private sectors to enhance learning performance delivery and understanding Our Department for Research and Knowledge transfer coordinates research degree programmes and knowledge transfer activities Research is carried out in all Faculties and Departments as well as range of research centres
Professional Accreditation
Edge Hill works closely with a number of professional bodies to ensure that students are kept up to date with the latest developments in a range of industries resulting in 85% of graduates leaving with professional and academic recognition We are one of only ten institutions in the country to have NCTJ accreditation for our undergraduate Journalism programme
Four thousand health social care and midwifery professionals are trained and educated at Edge Hill every year and the institution is the lead contractor for the assessment of Higher Level Teaching Assistants in the North West on behalf of the Training and Development Agency for Schools
Investment
�60million has been invested in the last ten years to develop a wide range of new high quality market-aware courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level supported by state-of-the-art facilities
Edge Hill boasts an excellent well-equipped academic teaching and learning environment with the latest development a �5million investment in performing arts opened in September 2005 at our Ormskirk Campus at the hub of an expanding network of delivery sites
The Ormskirk Campus boasts a lake piazza area and comfortable accommodation for 670 students The recently refurbished Rose Theatre provides a diverse programme from visiting professional companies and Sporting Edge offers some of the best community sports facilities in the North West
Growth
Edge Hill�s reputation for quality innovation and student support has led to an 83% increase in undergraduate applications over the last six years with student numbers increasing by 104% in the last five years Our portfolio continues to diversify and grow with new degrees including Dance and Sports Therapy launched in 2005 and Computing and Accountancy amongst those recruiting for September 2006 �5million HEFCE funding has also been awarded to develop a SOLSTICE online learning centre
Edge Hill educates over 15000 students every year with a quarter postgraduate and just over half part-time We are now the largest provider of Initial Teacher Training for secondary education and Foundation degrees for classroom assistants in the UK
Student Support
Edge Hill has a strong track record in student support Our Careers Centre is the first in Higher Education in the North West to be accredited with the Matrix quality standard and 931% of graduates are in jobs or further study six months after graduation
Responsive support systems include trained counsellors a health centre and inclusive support services for students with learning and personal support needs Our extensive IT and library provision has been acknowledged with the Learning Information Resource Centre at Aintree awarded the highest possible grade from the NHS NW Health Care Libraries Unit Our Learning Services department was awarded Charter Mark status for the quality of customer care
Edge Hill is offering one of the most generous bursary support packages for students spending 64% of new income on bursaries and outreach activities
Widening Access
The lead higher education institution in the region for Aimhigher and the Greater Merseyside and West Lancashire Lifelong Learning Network Edge Hill pursues an active Widening Access policy and our network of schools businesses and wider community partners continues to expand
2005 HEFCE performance indicators placed Edge Hill as first among all English higher education institutions for attracting mature and part time undergraduates from under-represented groups and in the top four nationally for attracting young students from working class families From 2006 Edge Hill is leading Action on Access the national coordination team which supports institutions and partnerships to promote widening participation in higher education
Vocational Focus
We prepare our graduates for future careers by working in partnership with over 300 employers from all sectors and through the vocational training incorporated into study programmes Student nurses midwives and operating department practitioners carry out over 300 hospital placements per year whilst the Faculty of Education collaborates with over 1500 schools and is the UK�s largest provider of Continuing Professional Development for teachers
