It is the UKs largest integrated campus university and occupies a 617 acre estate with Grade II registration by English Heritage the central feature of which is 19th century Keele Hall
Located centrally within the UK in Staffordshire Keele is a major contributor to its local economy With a turnover in excess of £80m and a total staff of some 1700 the University generates around £130m of business in the region

* 3266 participants we aim to teach on a variety of part-time short and award bearing courses through Keeles continuing and professional education programmes over the course of this academic year
* 2011 20% of the student population are registered on postgraduate degree programmes
Research Culture
Keele is a university which places high value on excellent research and we support internationally competitive expertise throughout the Health Humanities and Social Sciences and Natural Sciences We have established seven Research Institutes to provide this support and an environment for growth We aim to provide an environment where high quality research can flourish where we can encourage multidisciplinary work and support researchers to share their expertise to the benefit of the UK economy and the nation’s quality of life
To determine the focus for each Research Institute the University has identified seven multidisciplinary themes which represent areas of strength for Keele and include staff from a wide range of disciplines They are

Income Generation
Keele’s objective to increase gross research income and contribution to indirect costs has had steady progression over the last 6 years-
* Gross income has risen from £78million at the end of 2001 to £88 million at the end of July 2007
* Overhead recovery has also increased from £853K at the end of July 2001 to £1165K at the end of July 2007
Health
Health is an area of major growth and investment at Keele University The new Schools of Medicine and of Pharmacy started taking undergraduates in 2002 and 2006 respectively Together with existing programmes in Nursing Midwifery Physiotherapy and other health-related disciplines the total number of clinical students at Keele will approach 2000 by 2010 Postgraduate education and training in these disciplines is complemented by research activity that is focussed on clinical laboratory and community medicine within the Institutes of Science Technology in Medicine and Primary Care Health Sciences
The two Research Institutes and four Schools that comprise the Faculty of Health are each based in new custom-built accommodation on the University campus and at the nearby teaching hospital the University Hospital of North Staffordshire which itself is undergoing major redevelopment Close links with general hospitals in Shrewsbury and Stafford and the specialist orthopaedic hospital in Oswestry together with the mental health and primary care NHS Trusts covering Stoke and North Staffordshire ensure that students receive broad clinical experience during the course of their training
Keeles commitment to inter-disciplinarity is reflected by inter-professional health education at undergraduate level and research collaboration with health-related academic groups in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences including gerontology in the Institute of Life Course Studies and NHS management in the Institute of Public Policy Management Collaboration also extends to companies on the Universitys Science Park where around half of the current 40 businesses are related to biomedical RD and healthcare Already the UKs largest campus university development of a further 70 acres of the site will bring expansion in facilities for the Faculty of Health as well as new opportunities for incubation and enterprise
The Campus
Keeles campus estate is one of the exceptional features of the University and is integral to the quality of experience enjoyed by students staff and visitors alike
A one hundred acre area of the estate adjacent to Keele Hall has designated conservation status confirmed by Newcastle Borough Council Many architectural and landscape features dating from 19th century are of regional significance
Lindsay CourtKeele has built on its pioneering campus role by maintaining the highest proportion around 70% of full-time students in campus residence of any university in the country There is a total of 3116 rooms on campus 741 of these are en-suite
Keele Conferences directed by the Universitys Commercial Facilities Management Directorate attracts in excess of 100000 visitors guests and delegates throughout the year for a variety of conferences and events Recently awarded Gold for the Best Value for Money Conference Venue Best Conference and Banqueting Staff at the 2008 Meetings and Incentive Travel Awards Keele University is now firmly established as one of the countrys top academic conference and event venues

Keele Conferences is directed by the Universitys Commercial Facilities Management Directorate which has a total turnover of £10m contributing 20% of Keeles annual income
Keele is in the running in the Best Academic Venue Best Value For Money Conference Venue and Best Conference And Banqueting Staff categories at the 2008 Meetings And Incentive Travel Awards The awards are voted for by Keeles customers and in the last ten years the team has regularly been nominated winning the Best Academic Venue category three times

Organisational Structure
Keele is structured along the broad pattern of most pre-1992 universities
Court
The Court is designed to represent very wide interests in the local community It normally meets once a year and has over 200 members Its powers are in practice limited to receiving reports and appointing the Chancellor
Council
The Council is the “Supreme Governing Body” and has responsibility for the day-to-day government of the University It has 28 members the substantial majority of whom are not employees of the University but are appointed for their experience and expertise A number of academic staff and students are also members of the Council which meets quarterly The Council is chaired by the Pro-Chancellor and governs manages and regulates the finances accounts investments property business and all affairs whatsoever of the University Only the Council may enter into contracts on behalf of the University as a body
Senate
The Senate meets quarterly is chaired by the Vice-Chancellor and directs academic policy in relation to teaching and research Senate has the duty to assure itself that the Universitys academic standards are properly observed through the reports of its Committees and the External Examiners appointed to ensure this in individual degree courses Degrees other than Honorary Degrees Diplomas Certificates Fellowships Scholarships prizes and other distinctions of the University are awarded by the Senate
Vice-Chancellors Committee
The Vice-Chancellor is the principal executive officer of the University Vice-Chancellors Committee responsible for operational management meets weekly and is comprised of the Vice-Chancellor the Deputy and Pro Vice-Chancellors the heads of the service directorates and the deans of the academic faculties
Organisational Structure
Keele has 13 academic Schools and 7 Research Institutes grouped within 3 faculties of Health Humanities Social Sciences and Natural Sciences Educational activity is managed by Schools and research and related enterprise activity managed by Research Institutes
The Centre for Professional Continuing Education co-ordinates academic activity on short courses and award bearing programmes
Five directorates are responsible for the administrative management and services of the University These are

Provides commercial services facilities management and manages the Universitys public profile

Provides people services to support all those who work and study at the University
* Academic Services Directorate
Provides services which directly support the work of the academic units which deliver teaching research and knowledge transfer
