Coming to the UK for an internship is an exciting opportunity for any international student – you’ll learn great office skills, meet loads of like-minded people and get to live away from home.
But even if you are sorted with a job, coming here alone, and for the first time can be a scary process, especially if you can’t get your accommodation sorted beforehand.
If you are coming to the UK before the start of your internship and need to look for a flat, then why not stay in a hostel until you have somewhere more permanent to crash?
There are hundreds of hostels all over the UK catering to students and cash-strapped backpackers looking for temporary accommodation, and many are so well-equipped so you will be more than comfortable for an extended period.
Hostels here have come a long way in recent years – some now have private rooms and facilities like laundrettes, which are perfect if you are living out of a suitcase. You can also find multi-lingual staff, who are often happy to help you with finding accommodation or get to know to a new city.
The social aspect of hostels is a big draw – with areas like common rooms and a lively social calendar, you can make friends and contacts with other travellers before you start your new job. They also cater to budget travellers, with cheap room rates, and communal kitchens, so you can eat cheaply and when you like.
Even if you already have a flat sorted, coming early and travelling around the UK is a great way to get acclimatized and get to know the country, and improve your language skills. It also gives you a chance to unwind before you start a busy 9 to five job!
With Internship UK offices in London, the capital is the first choice for many students on an internship. Staying in the city can be expensive, but there are dozens of hostels in London to choose from before you have sorted somewhere more permanent.

Each of the private rooms has a television, free linen, towels, and there are internet and self-catering facilities. Only a ten minute walk from a sandy beach, this is a peaceful place to relax and unwind in the summer before starting an internship. Sporty types can try their hand at water-ports, golf or tennis nearby, or decamp to the town’s traditional shops, pubs and restaurants in the winter.
